Code love
I've sat wondering recently, why is it that I have such an immense respect for coding folk. I've always had this sort of deep, deep feeling of (respect?) towards them, in a very specific kind of way. Ever since I was young I had this image of seeing the 'elders' in the community as near-mythological figures, able to weave together not only communities, but whole pieces of software. Like magic, but it was real. Everyone could see it. It was grandiose, I think is the best word, for describing my feelings back then.
Nowadays, I chip away at a few languages. It's hard learning on my own, when most of my life's education was only focused on art. I often feel so very behind my peers in terms of both knowledge and skill, but I'm doing my best to push on -- now that I physically am able to. Still, I don't feel like I deserve to call myself anything near a "developer" or "coder". I merely try to glue together something in my brain, yeah?
Still, it does immensely anger me whenever I see other folk call themselves devs, only to end up lacking even the most basic knowledge. I'm not saying you need to have a whole personal Vim config to be a dev, but good lord, if you don't even know what "ls" does I can't help but feel a tinge concerned.
This relates to a few posts I've written on blahaj today, but it really does make me miffed. Maybe it's because I've seen the wizardry some folks can do. I don't know. I'm probably pissed over essentially nothing. In the end, I only wish we respected knowledgeable devs a bit more.
